Adept Management partners with Questant Inc to extend regional presence to the East coast
Adept Management Ltd [AML] is proud to announce its partnership with New York based Questant Inc in a move to extend ADePT’s regional presence to the Eastern seaboard. Questant Inc, which has offices in New York and Pennsylvania, offers consultancy support and training in project management and controls – with a particular focus on value delivery and risk management. Its principal, Simon Taylor, has lived and worked in the region for the last 15 years having previously worked internationally as a consultant at a leading multi-national consultancy firm. Questant Inc is the latest addition to AML’s impressive family of delivery and systems partners, which also includes: Oracle Primavera, Microsoft (Systems partners); South East Software (Software partner); Evans and Peck (International consultancy partner); and the California Center for Construction Education (CCCE – Training partner). For further information on Questant Inc visit www.questantinc.com or go direct to Questant’s ADePT pages to schedule a meeting with Simon and his team.

ADePT Design Manager – applying production control principles when using alternative delivery methods
In response to an increasing number of requests for information on the ADePT Design Manager application, we have released this brief overview presentation. The ADePT toolset is being applied on a number of projects internationally and all have reported back on how the ADePT Design Manager application is increasing efficiency, reducing waste and adding value by providing a single, standard approach to synchronizing, maintaining, monitoring and reporting the rate of production of the team during design, procurement and construction. The toolset is based on an adaptation of Last Planner™ which enables this lean methodology to be implemented during pre-construction as well as construction; the methodology and software enable the entire project process to be optimized through integrated scheduling, whilst providing a mechanism for ongoing management, monitoring and control of delivery performance. This presentation (which is in PDF format and can be run as a slide show using CTRL+L) offers an introduction to the approach and provides illustrations of performance data (and how this should be interpreted) from recent and current projects.

Managing Design in an Integrated Process: Latest training date announced by CCCE
The next course date for the highly successful Managing Design in an Integrated Process training program date has been released – 29th and 30th September in Costa Mesa, California. Representatives of over 17 of the US’s leading construction companies have already attended this exciting program - from as far afield as Alaska, Hawaii, and Virginia. Attendees have commented on their ability to take the learning, techniques and tools from this program and use them straight out of the course to improve delivery of their projects. Details of the course agenda and dates can be downloaded here and an introduction to the course is provided here. You can register for forthcoming course via this link or download, complete and return the registration form via fax. Do not delay in booking your place on the program and receiving 14 hours of credits toward DBIA accreditation.

California Center for Construction Education embraces ADePT as delivery partner
The California Center for Construction Education (CCCE) is an educational outreach unit designed to provide practitioner education, applied research services, and consultation to the design and construction industry in the state of California and to serve the community at large as a clearinghouse for industry leadership, knowledge, technology, and innovation. In recognition of ADePT’s pivotal role in enabling truly integrated project delivery, Adept Management has been embraced as training and delivery partner by the CCCE to co–lead the ‘Integrated Project Delivery’ training program. AML Technologies’ knowledge of interdisciplinary design practice combined with a wealth of experience in the management of the design and procurement process in fast–track projects (Design–Build, IPD, etc) makes us an ideal partner for the CCCE.

Recent paper receives great response from industry
A recent paper co-authored by Glenn Ballard, Romano Nickerson and AML Technologies’ Jamie Hammond has received a fantastic response from lean practitioners from across the industry. The paper, which was published by the International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC) and is available for download here, was also presented at a recent Lean Design Forum event in St Louis, Missouri. This paper describes the application of Production Control Principles using real case study material from live projects within the construction sector. The paper demonstrates the power of lean during the design phases of projects.

AML present how Design-Builders can take their performance from Good to Great
AML Technologies co-presented at the 2009 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) National Conference and Expo in Washington DC in early November. Conference attendance was at an all time high, confirming views that the economy is getting back on track and that Design-Build (along with other alternative delivery methods) is becoming a primary delivery method for the US construction market. AML Technologies Senior Vice President John Steele co-presented a paper with leading D-B speaker and educator, Barb Jackson. The presentation described a new approach, the D-B Readiness Assessment, to finding gaps in current practice – both within a business and within projects. A full auditorium learned how the D-B Readiness Assessment has been used successfully within three leading construction organizations, and case studies provided real data on how these organizations are taking steps to move from Good to Great performance. If you want to learn more about the D-B Readiness Assessment or any of AML’s other services and tools please take a look at our services. The DBIA 2009 conference presentation can be downloaded here as a PDF.

RQ Construction continue to build on their successes
RQ Construction, the fast growing North San Diego based Design-Build Contractor, is going from strength to strength in enhancing its project and business performance. AML has worked with RQ for the last 2 years to develop ‘Design Management’ capability, introduce ‘processes and procedures’ to ensure successful project delivery, and introduce tools and techniques – including the ADePT Design Builder and Design Manager software applications – to augment RQ’s in-house expertise.

Sundt strives for continuous improvement in use of alternative delivery methods
The award winning construction organization, Sundt, has engaged AML and its training partner, DB Ready-Team™, to independently review current practice across 3 of its regional offices – Tempe, Sacramento and San Diego. Sundt is continually striving for increased performance in its projects and to enable this, the company is focusing on enhancing its design delivery approaches – the aim being to standardize the process, methods, and tools of delivery whilst defining and sharing ‘best practices’ techniques across all facets of the business. The ‘recommendations’ from this study have been presented to the leadership team and a strategy is now being implemented to further enhance the way in which the business delivers its projects.

BNIM Architects adopt VALiD and ADePT to enable efficient project delivery
Kansas City based design practice, Berkebile Nelson Immenschuh McDowell Architects, have embraced AML’s Value in Design (VALiD) methodology and toolset in conjunction with the ADePT ‘Design Builder’ software application to further enhance its project delivery processes. BNIM prides itself on innovation to ensure that the customer’s expectations are met and, wherever possible, exceeded. VALiD provides the means of capturing and targeting ‘value’ from the perspective of all stakeholders (even when these expectations / values may be competing), enabling the evolving product of design, the building or built asset, to be continually assessed in relation to how these values are being met.

DPR Construction Inc engage AML to define training and development requirements
AML is collaborating with DPR Construction Inc to understand the key challenges that they face in the management and control of the design process. DPR Construction, like many contracting organizations, has recognized the high-risk nature of the design phase and is taking action to mitigate the impact that uncoordinated and poorly managed design can have on overall project performance. AML are working collaboratively with a dedicated DPR Construction task force to frame the problems that are faced throughout the design phase and develop a training and development curriculum for DPR’s Design and Project Managers that will provide them with the thinking processes, methods, and tools to overcome these challenges day to day. The resulting standardization in design delivery will enable DPR to further increase the consistency of its delivery across all projects in all sectors.
